Clifton Wheeler , 1929 , American Impressionists

This Indiana artist was born in Hadley, Indiana but moved to Mooresville, where his father owned and operated a flour mill, when he was young. Clifton studied with some of our favorite painters, including William Forsyth, William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. Wheeler was dedicated to the Indianapolis artistic community, and was an active participant in the Indiana Artists Club, the Hoosier Salon, and the Art Association of Indianapolis.

An oil on canvas showing a country scene in winter. Low rolling hills in the center and higher hills in the background. A group of barns on the left side of the canvas. One large green barn with a tall tree in the back. There are chimneys on the dwellings. Everything is snow covered, white in middle ground, deep blue shadows in foreground and purple hills in the distance. A large part of the canvas is gray sky.
