The Richmond Art Museum actively engages in conservation and care of the permanent collection. As the stewards of an important American art collection, the museum maintains a collection management policy ensuring proper care of all artwork. In 2002, the museum received a generous bequest from the Estate of Dorothy R. Goodwell for the purpose of conservation. This fund initiated an ongoing, yearly conservation program for the museum. Funds are allocated annually in the operating budget for conservation and care of the art collection.

To date, more than fifty works of art have been conserved through the generosity of this bequest. The Richmond Art Museum utilizes a variety of trained, professional conservators across the Midwest to conserve works of art.

Starting in 2008, the museum began working with Barry Bauman, Conservator of Paintings and Fine Works of Art for Non-Profit Organizations. Barry Bauman left the private sector to establish America’s first national conservation laboratory dedicated to offering complimentary conservation services to museums and non-profit organizations. With his assistance, the museum has been able to exhibit works of art that had previously been unable to be exhibited due to their condition.
