Connection to Freedom: Works by Mason Archie
Opening Reception: January 31, 2026; 1 – 3PM
Artist Talk: 1:30PM

Mason Archie is a distinguished American oil painter whose work stands at the intersection of masterful traditional realism and profound historical storytelling. Born in Dayton, Ohio, and now based in Indianapolis, Indiana, Archie’s artistic journey spans more than four decades and reflects a rare devotion to craft, cultural memory, and the enduring power of painting.

After a successful career in commercial art, Archie made a pivotal decision in 2005 to pursue fine art full time. He committed himself to the discipline of traditional oil painting, drawing inspiration from the old masters and grounding his practice in meticulous technique, superior materials, and a reverence for realism. This commitment quickly set his work apart, earning him national recognition for paintings that are as technically accomplished as they are emotionally and historically resonant.

Archie’s work has been exhibited at some of the nation’s most respected cultural institutions, including the Schuster Art Center, the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, the Indiana State Museum, the Haan Museum, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American Art, the David C. Driskell Center, the National African American Museum & Cultural Center, the Indianapolis Art Center, the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, and Herron Galleries. His paintings have been featured in leading art publications such as The International Review of African American Art, American Art Collector, American Lifestyle Magazine, Black Art in America, and The American Art Review.

His excellence has been recognized through numerous honors, including the Creative Renewal Fellowship from the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Lilly Endowment, the DeHaan Artist of Distinction Award, and repeated Best of Show and top honors in the Hoosier Salon’s Annual Juried Exhibitions. Archie’s work is held in prominent public, corporate, and private collections, including the Indiana State Museum, the Richmond Art Museum, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American Art, Nationwide Corporation, Wells Fargo, Lilly Endowment, Elanco (a division of Eli Lilly), Eskenazi Health, and Community South Hospital.
