The Artists of Brown County
February 4th – June 3
This exhibition represents the works from the Brown County Art Colony that are in the Richmond Art Museum permanent collection. Indiana claims two notable art colonies, the Richmond Group and Brown County Art Colonies. Although the Brown County artists exhibited in the Annual Exhibition throughout the 20’s and 30’s, the museum did not actively acquire works by the group. As we expand our collection of historic Indiana art, we are continually seeking to increase our representation of works by the Brown County artists.
In 1907, T. C. Steele brought his significant reputation to the hills of Brown County and his presence served as a motivation for other accomplished artists to visit Nashville. The pioneer atmosphere, remote hills, hollows, brooks and woodlands were inspiration for other artists from urban areas. These artists, like the Richmond Group, primarily painted landscapes. The first meeting of the Brown County Art Gallery Association was in 1926. Members who attended included L.O. Griffith, Adolph Shulz, Ada Walter Shulz, V.J. Cariani, Marie Goth, Carl Graf and Dale Bessire.
