Urban Vision: People and Places by Barbara Bernhardt
July 8 – September 23, 2023
RAM is excited to display work by Ms. Barbara Bernhardt in the Dr. Elieen Cravens and Dr. Dana Reihman Gallery. Drawings and paintings by the Richmond artist will be on on display beginning July 8, 2023. This exhibit is largely possible due to a major gift of Bernhardt’s work to RAM by Stephen Anshutz.
Barbara Bernhardt was a graduate of Morton High School in Richmond where she studied art and literature. She studied at the Art Students League in New York City under the training of John Sloan, noted painter and member of the Ashcan school, which focused on urban life in New York City and surrounds. Ashcan artists concentrated on portraying New York’s vitality and recording its seamy side, recording current events and their era’s social and political rhetoric. Stylistically, they depended on a dark palette and gestural brushwork which could be rendered from memory.
