Works by Elmira Kempton
Step into the world of Elmira Kempton (1892–1971), a cornerstone of the Indiana art community and a visionary educator whose influence spanned decades. This exhibition brings together a curated selection of Kempton’s works, highlighting her journey from the prestigious Cincinnati Art Academy to her pivotal role as the Head of the Art Department at Earlham College. Born and raised in Richmond, Indiana, Kempton’s artistic voice was shaped by some of the most influential mentors of her time, including Wayman Adams and Eliot O’Hara. Her work reflects a mastery of technique honed through years of rigorous study and a deep connection to the regional landscapes and subjects of the Midwest.
Beyond the canvas, Kempton was a dedicated educator. As the Head of the Art Department at Earlham College and an instructor in Art History and Ceramics, she shaped the minds of generations of artists. This retrospective honors not only her technical skill in painting but her lifelong commitment to the arts in Richmond and beyond.
“Art is not just a practice, but a history to be taught and a beauty to be shared.”
